Back

I'm back from vacation. Not yet at full strength, though, as I've got a lot of things I've got to catch up on. There are also high winds in Hollywood right now, and electricity's been knocked out twice already, so who even knows if I'll be able to publish this in time. (I guess you'll know when you read it.)

I was in the Midwest, my old stomping ground (some prefer stamping ground--sort of like the chomping/champing at the bit distinction). I discovered a number of my friends were unhappy with how harshly President Obama is being criticized. Fascinating.

  1. I always thought it was a mash of stumping ground and referred to early colonial farmers who had to remove trees and stumps for their initial homestead and fields.

Of course the Obama supporters are disappointed by the harsh criticism (though it mainly seems to be from folks you could have predicted a year ago would be harshly critical of him) When folks buy in, they don't want the boat rocked. It was no different for all those Texans who couldn't get the hatred the Lesser Bush evoked. Team sympathies seem to be ruling the day right now.

  2. I've also heard "old tramping grounds" which I think refers to the same sense as "stomping grounds" not to the availability of easy sexual partners. (We already have a word for that- "college")

  3. As you can see from the link, stomping ground refers to "a traditional gathering place for horses or cattle, which stamp down the ground with their hooves" and comes from the early 1800s.

  4. Whose criticism are Obama supporters unhappy with? I can't imagine that Obama supporters really thought critics from the right would be won over to policies with which they fundamentally disagree. But I can understand surprise at the criticism from the far left.
