Theatre Shock

I remember the first time I saw True Romance. It's set in Detroit, but in one of the earliest scenes, Christian Slater attends a movie at the Vista, a well-known LA theatre. I was confused. (Especially with other scenes clearly shot in Detroit.)

Recently, I was watching Foul Play, which I hadn't seen in years. It's set in San Francisco, and makes a big deal about its location. But early on, Goldie Hawn has a date with a guy at the Nuart, another famous LA cinema.

I suppose it doesn't matter to most of the country, but when films try to pass off famous LA cinemas as being somewhere else, it really takes me out of the movie.

  1. In Flashdance (OK I've never seen it but a girlfriend from my Pittsburgh days did), they show Jennifer Beals getting on the Mon Incline (and inclined railway running down Mt Washington across the Monongahela river) and getting off in downtown Pittsburgh. They ignored an entire river thats fairly wide at that point. It ruined the verisimilitude for me and I can never see this as a result.

PS I also heard that Jennifer Beals hogged the weight machines at Yale - just wanted to get in all my Flashdance trivia in one post

  2. Into the Night came out when I was in college. I remember one car chase when the characters raced up the ramp of the parking structure under the Century City complex and then exited to Wishire in Westwood. At least it was all in one city.

  3. Ferris Bueller and When Harry Met Sally both make a hash out of the geography of Chicago.

  4. Every time a tv show supposedly set in NYC shows a (Canadian) phone booth, the episode is ruined for me.
