Hope Springs Eternal

Today's game of Michigan versus Penn State is a big one. It's big for PSU, of course, since they're a top ten team still trying to prove themselves. This is one of their biggest roadblocks left.

But it's bigger for Michigan. It's been a long time since they started out so excruciatingly bad. A record of 3-3 with a tough schedule ahead makes you wonder if they're even Bowl-worthy. If they drop below .500, you'll see millions of Wolverine fans finally giving up on them.

And yet, as I go to watch the game (thousands of miles away out here in L.A.) I can't help but feel they're going to win. I don't get it.

I don't get why you think they might win either, LAGuy. Was it the tackling on that third down play against Minnie last weekend, the field goal kicking or the 3-14 on 3rd down converstions? Having said that, I hope you're right. Really do. But...

One other thing, I do disagree w/ you saying that if they dip below .500 you'll see M fans "give up" on them. Disappointed? Yes. Angry? You bet. But give up? No way.

PS Last time we started out 3-3? 1990...then we won our final 6 to finish # 7 and 8 in the polls. Oh, we should be so lucky this year.

The spirit of Fielding Yost has responded to my post. This has to be a good sign.

One winter I was walking on a lonely athletic campus, going as a lark by myself to see a wrestling match. It was dusk, cold and absolutely no one was around. A car pulled up with some obvious parent/grandparent types with a sibling or two.

"Can you tell me where the ice arena is?"

The question surprised me, because I didn't think anything was going on at Yost Ice Arena. And they were in an awkward spot, having to navigate one way roads and dead ends to get there. But I did my best to explain a convluted path to them.

Then I continued my walk for several more minutes in the cold to the wrestling match. It was quite a bit of time, for whatever reason. Just as I sat down and unwrapped all my winter garments, pleased to be in the warm inside, I looked up to see the same family coming in just as they noticed me, too, and pointed. The father giving me a withering look.

Upon reflection, I concluded that he had asked me the location of Chrysler Arena.
