The Height Of Celebrity

Our last quiz was so popular, we decided to try another. This one is a less highbrow but, we hope, just as much fun.

Here's the deal. We list the actor, a real-life person the actor portrayed, and the movie where it happened. You have to answer a simple question--who's taller, the actor or the real-life person.

1. Alan Alda as George Plimpton in Paper Lion

2. Gary Cooper as Alvin C. York in Sergeant York

3. Faye Dunaway as Bonnie Parker in Bonnie And Clyde

4. Mel Gibson as William Wallace in Braveheart

5. Ben Kingsley as Gandhi in Gandhi

6. Madonna as Eva Peron in Evita

7. Steve McQueen as Henri "Papillon" Charrière in Papillon

8. Gary Oldman as Beethoven in Immortal Beloved

9. Peter O'Toole as T. E. Lawrence in Lawrence Of Arabia

10. Ronald Reagan as George "The Gipper" Gipp in Knute Rockne All American

11. Mickey Rooney as Lorenz Hart in Words And Music

12. Geoffrey Rush as the Marquis de Sade in Quills

13. Denzel Washington as Rubin "Hurricane" Carter in The Hurricane

14. Sigourney Weaver as Dian Fossey in Gorillas In The Mist

15. Reese Witherspoon as June Carter in Walk The Line

The answers are now available on a Tuesday post here at Pajama Guy.

A lot of them I haven't a clue, at least not off the top of my head. But here are some guesses. Alda is taller. Dunaway is taller. Gibson is taller. Madonna is taller. (I'm beginning to see a pattern.) O'Toole is taller and that's the one I feel best about. Mickey Rooney is shorter. (Finally.) Washington is shorter. Weaver is taller. Witherspoon is shorter.

For the rest I have no idea, not that I have any idea for the ones I guessed at.

The answers will be posted tomorrow, so I'll just say not all your guesses are correct.

guessing: alda -- shorter; cooper, taller; dunaway -- taller; gibson -- shorter; madonna -- shorter; mcqueen -- shorter; o'toole -- taller; weaver -- taller; witherspoon -- shorter; rooney -- shorter; reagan -- taller.
The rest -- no idea. But i'll recklessly go out on a limb and guess that the actors lean to the short side.

Interesting- is there a method behind the test-- that actors will generally be shorter because cinematically they can be made to appear taller (but then I guess the converse appplies too )

Will you have information on the biggest height differentials-who "stretched' (or shrunk) the most for the role

The guesses two comments above are good, but not perfect.

The "method" behind this test is I picked what I thought were interesting choices and only then tried to find out the heights of those involved.

When I reveal the answers tomorrow, they will include height differential.

The hard part is that celebrities work so hard to hide their actual heights (and ages). If you want to get a good look at how this works, and a fairly accurate take on celebrity heghts (are they tall or are they short), go to bigheadedpygmies.com. It's pretty funny, too!
