STP

I recently heard the Stone Temple Pilots on the radio. It got me wondering, where'd the name come from?

For some bands I know the history (The Beatles). For some bands I know the secret (Steely Dan). For some bands I can figure it out (Camper Van Beethoven).

But what's the deal with the Stone Temple Pilots. Anyone have a clue?

I don't know but it reminded me of a local band I used to see advertised called the "Rock Church Navigators" who named them in tribute to the STPs.
Never found out if they were any any good

There is a history described in a Wikipedia entry that claims their name evolved from "Shirley Temple's Pussy," to "Stereo Temple Pirates" to "Stone Temple Pilots." They liked the initials STP, like the oil company, and were pressured to leave their first name behind. Reliable?

That last story sound possible. It reminds me of how, allegedly, Chrissie Hynde wanted to call her first punk band "Mike Hunt's Honorable Discharge." (Actually, she was in England so it would have been "Honourable.")
