Semi-Shocker
I admit I didn't see it coming. Melinda was kicked off American Idol. Still, I wasn't that shocked. Three reasons.
1) Melinda and Jordin were similar in style, at least compared to Blake, so they split their vote.
2) Melinda, as technically proficient as she might be, never struck me as that exciting--the other two may not have her pipes, but there's something extra when they sing (like they might screw up?).
3) Melinda has been the heir apparent so long, perhaps voters got tired of being told what to do.

Tell me, would you really want to buy an album from Jordin or Beat Box Blake?
With the fawning tongue bath she received weekly from Simon and the clear dominance of her singing ability, I think voters felt that everyone else would be voting for Melinda so why not throw a few votes Jordin or Blake's way, and if enough people did that that carried Jordin and Blake over Melinda in the end. There's also a good conspiracy theory that the 19 Entertainment folks do not want another Taylor Hicks (technically good singer, too old to appeal to youngsters, stylistically retro) and therefore sabotaged Melinda with Jordin pimping.
Good point--they all thought they were voting for second place. No need for conspiracy theories.
By the way, I wouldn't buy an album from Jordin, or Blake, or Melinda, or essentially anyone who's ever been on the show.
