Craig Questions

Well, a rather silly scandal has forced Senator Craig out. I'm not quite sure why in particular he had to go. Was it because he committed a crime (or at least pled to it)? That he tried to solicit sex in a rest room? That he lied about it later? Because he's gay? Because he's a hypocrite? Because he's a punchline?

Regardless, are we really paying cops to sit in stalls to catch people? That sounds creepier than the crime. And who released the interrogation tape? Is that standard procedure now?

I think it's fallout from two things: (1) the Clinton impeachment and (2) the presence of the Religious Right in GOP politics. Indeed, the impeachment led immediately to the pseudo-speakership of Bob Livingston (forced to resign as speaker before he ever got the job).

Since then, there has been an assumption, both in the press and in the public, than a Republican who commits a sexual act deemed immoral by the major conservative Christian denominations is ipso facto a hypocrite.

Whether this is good or bad, it certainly involves an expansion of the word "hypocrite".

Am I being too specific to cite Christian morality as the test? I don't think so. I hereby predict that if a major GOP figure, within the next year, is caught engaging in bestiality, or in some sort of threesome (even though unmarried), he will be forced from office. And yet the GOP has never, that I recall, campaigned against either of these vices.

I have to say that I am not normally all afraid of how the big bad sexual world will affect my children, but when I learn that solicitation and sex acts are apparently commonplace in a bathroom that I have actually sent my young kids into alone, that does give me the creeps. Apparently, these activities were obvious enough to other users of the bathroom that they complained to the police, which led to the sting. I do think that kind of complaint is legitimate, and the police were correct to respond.

As far as Craig goes, the lesson is, if you build your political career significantly on a pillar of decrying homosexuals and their "agenda," then you cannot survive being outed -- especially when you are outed for anonymous public bathroom solicitation. The people who voted for you find what you were doing abhorent and deviant -- and that's a big part of the reason they put you there.

And I do agree with Mr. King that other sexual proclivities would also preclude such a political career.

Bestiality, maybe, I suppose it depends upon the sheep, but a threesome? My God, that's exactly what the Republicans need. Although, again, I suppose it depends upon the sheep.

SWMBCg, etc.
