Hit The Air Running

I have a friend who made a prediction about the first thing our next President will do, whoever it is. First official action: granting amnesty to all analog TV owners and put back the transition to HDTV from February 17, 2009 to 2010.

I have never understood why the Congress decided this was an area of national emergency that required a federal mandate to change a service provided by private companies. My cell-phone service managed to change from analog to digital all by itself - one day my phone company notified me that they were shutting down the analog towers in my area and I would need a new phone. My old one was 10 years old and worked, but the market had made it obsolete - I could handle that. Regular broadcast TV is fine with me, I don't need HD, and I would rather just wait until there is a market demand for HDTV than have Congress foist it upon me. (In my case, I get cable, so I won't be running out to buy HDTVs anyway).

Lobbying, lobbying, lobbying- A kiss to the cable industry

My understanding is that the lobbying was done by the broadcasters themselves (along with the cable companies). The broadcasters can send more information on the same bandwidth using the digital signals, and won't be forced to maintain analog equipment just to compete with hold-out analog broadcasters.
