Making Waves
I've been meaning to comment on this for a while:
[Sean] Avery made headlines across the hockey world Sunday night when, during a 5-on-3 power play, he stood with his back to the play and waved his arms in front of Brodeur to distract the goalie. At another point, he also held his stick in front of Brodeur’s mask and waved the stick back and forth in another attempt at distraction.
Two things intrigue me about this:
1) What's wrong, Avery, a 5-3 advantage isn't enough?
2) In the 90 years of the NHL, why had no one thought of this before?

Hey, it's the NHL. Who cares?
He deserves to have his spleen severed.
Had that been done in the olden days, then it would have been open season on the (ex-redwing) Schmuck! Nowadays, with Bettman policing the league, the players are limited in self-patrol. Consequently, little coward-fucks like avery do dastardly kinds of things. Bettman should let the players take care of these things, not the suits!

Ah yes, the self-policing of the NHL, where commiting acts that would get you two years in jail out on the streets merit a two-minute penalty.
Instead, we now have slashing little speed demons ----- a stick in the ribs here (then skate away), one to the face (then skate away), defending self with stick not hands (then skating away) ---- who are rarely held accountable for their actions. Bring back more goons who can take care of these cowards without having to worry about multiple game suspensions, just a five minute penalty. These stick incidents (that can, oh, cost an eye or something) are the big problem. The new rules with less clutching and grabbing are fine, but players need to be able to protect themselves with fists not weapons.
