"You couldn’t have a starker contrast between the multiple layers of checks and balances [at ‘60 Minutes’] and a guy sitting in his living room in his pajamas writing.”
This story was about LA getting much better air quality through aggressive antipollution measures, not Pittsburgh getting worse.
Pittsburgh's position on this list is almost entirely due to the continued operation of the the Clairton Coke Works (not cola- the smelly stuff) which is one the few, if not the only area mills that did not shutter during the 70s and early 80s and there has been much effort to keep it open since then - including, apparently, the deferred application of air quality standards - the Works expect to be fully compliant by 2015 (right). If the immediate Clairton area, which is in a semi-contained river valley, were not counted as part of the Pittsburgh area for this measure, Pittsburgh would be in the top rankings for air quality.
I don't know if the science holds up (maybe the smelly air was intelligently designed)but thats the party line

You can take the boy out of Pittsburgh, but you can't take Pittsburgh out of the boy.
We can't help ourselves- although I cringe when I hear Namath or Marino talk
