Is It Really 20 Years?
Here's Jesse Walker's top films of 1988 list. No major complaints--I like most of these films. Here are a few other films of the year that didn't make it:
Big - still probably Tom Hanks' best performance
Bull Durham - the best film ever about baseball?
Die Hard - maybe the best action film of our era--don't hold all the weak copies against it
Hairspray - the John Waters original
High Hopes - Mike Leigh doing what he does best
Married To The Mob - not Demme's best, but still fun
Midnight Run - a pretty good mix of action and comedy
The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen - highly flawed but it looks amazing
Beetlejuice - fun from Tim Burton, with a great turn from Michael Keaton
Coming To America - not a critical favorite, but a crowd pleaser with a charming performance from Eddie Murphy
Earth Girls Are Easy - this Julien Temple film got no respect from anyone but I think it's a lot of fun
Police Story 2 - one of Jackie Chan's greatest
She's Having A Baby - not great, but an underrated John Hughes film
Tales From The Gimli Hospital - perhaps not as good as its reputation, but it did introduce a distinctly new voice into the film world
Tapeheads -- a rare cult film worthy of its reputation
They Live -- John Carpenter's bizarre action/satire that takes on the Reagan years

Bull Durham - the best film ever about baseball?
Yes. Definitely.
The best film ever about baseball?- Yes, for people who don't like baseball
While Jesse Walker would give the honor to Naked Gun.
His #11, The Vanishing, is perhaps the best example you can cite to for what happens when you get an American remake of a good European film.
Bull Durham certainly has the best monologue about baseball.
I love baseball and Bull Durham. I hate The Natural, Bang The Drum Slowly and Field of Dreams. And Mark Teixiera.
I thought The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen was an '89 movie -- maybe I'll revise my list to stick it in somewhere.
I would have included They Live on my list, by the way, if the lead actor wasn't so terrible.
P.S. to Queensguy: My #11 is the original Vanishing, not the remake!
I believe Munchausen was made in 1988 but not released in the US until 1989, so you may be right about that date.
And I like Rowdy Roddy Piper.

Sure -- as a wrestler...
Btw, Beetle Juice just barely missed the cut.
Oh, and the IMDB says Munchausen made its European debut in 1988. I just added it to my list.
