Murder, Porn And Cheap Candy

I caught a few minutes of Taxi Driver. It's one of those films that I think has a lot of interesting things in it, but also a lot of problems.

One of those things is it's become a time capsule, and we get to see how sleazy and rundown (but fascinating) midtown Manhattan was in the 70s. Paul Schrader's screenplay (inspired by his own life) was originally set in Los Angeles--now that would have been a different film.

Another documentary bit: De Niro is at the concession stand of a porno theatre--run by his girlfriend in real life, Diahnne Abbott--and buys a coke, popcorn and two or three pieces of candy. The price: $1.85. Was it ever that cheap? Think of Jerry Seinfeld's old line about how movie theatres have their candy under glass like it's jewelry--"I'd like to see something in a Milk Dud."
