Since Ed MacMahon will always be linked to Johnny Carson, in remembrance of him, here are links to a few posts I put up about Carson himself.

Wow- you mentioned in 2005 that Jay Leno was going to leave the tonight show in 2009- I know it was announced and all but its still amazing when things that people say actually happen (I remember thinking that about the war in Bosnia that was predicted for years before it happened but thats another issue).
Interesting comments section in the boston.com obituary for Ed MacMahon- more than a few seemed insistent on making the point that even if he was a no-talent sycophant (I don't agree- he was very good at what he did even if we can't define what that actually was very well), he deserved the good life and celebrity because he was a g.d. marine who fought for his country in two wars.
Probably says more about the type of people who comment on obits than anything about Ed
I think the reason for the Jay Leno retirement thing--even though he was at the top of the ratings then--was the negotiations with Conan, who was doing fine in the second slot. They wanted to promise him the Tonight Show or he might bolt, but they moved it far enough down the road so that they could enjoy Jay a bit longer before his show aged too much.
Well, 2009 has finally arrive and we'll see how well this strategy is working.
