Big Six

I sometimes check out Poker After Dark. Every week they have a new set of players. This week features Doyle Brunson, Chris Ferguson, Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, Howard Lederer and Daniel Negreanu. I only mention this because it's such a powerhouse lineup. If you took a poll on who are the six biggest names in poker, it'd probably be them.

I agree...

...except for maybe Howard Lederer, who is probably better known as a commentator than a player.

How 'bout Johnny Chan?

Johnny Chan was one of the first poker superstars to be known outside the game because of his appearance, and lionization, in the movie Rounders. But I think he's been passed since then. Howard Lederer, the Professor, might not quite be in the league of the others, but he's highly respected and has gotten to be quite well known due to many TV appearances.

In any case, he got knocked out on Monday (he and Chris Ferguson went head to head and it was a coin flip who'd take it down) so we now have the top five names playing.

And I thought civilization ended when Bowling was on TV and then again when golf was on the radio....

Do we envision a future show involving classic board games (not game shows but guys sitting around a board) - it could work with Monopoly, Risk, Trouble, Chutes and Ladders

One more thought... it would be a great cheap replacement for Leno

Hey, I'd watch that channel. I'd like to see the best games played at the highest level. In fact, I pitched something very similar to that in the 90s.

I recall watching Bobby Fisscher's chess match with Boris Spassky on PBS in the 70s. The commentators were offsite with a big board showing the moves- you couldn't see the players but on the other hand the commentators (Brits I believe) were not restrained whisperers (like golf announcers) but went at it with gusto. Enjoyable even if at the time I had no idea what they were talking about

One more comment concerning Howard Lederer vs. Johnny Chan.

First off, let me state I like the very articulate Howard Lederer and would probably prefer to see him play TV poker than Johnny Chan.

However, Lederer a "better" or even "better known" player than Chan???

Johnny Chan won two world series final events in a row, and was one knockout away from winning three in a row (the player who halted the streak, unfortunately, was a 24-year-old Phil Hellmuth). That alone elevates Chan to almost god-like status in the poker world.

But here's a final test: Poll a group of top poker pros and ask them who they'd rather play, Howard Lederer or Johnny Chan?

I think the answer would be very clear.
