Films Like Them

I recently watched Spies Like Us on TV. (And soon after Family Guy parodied it--didn't see that coming.) It's a minor hit from the 80s, directed by John Landis, teaming up Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd. It's got its moment, but is hardly worth delving into.

It made me wonder just how many comedies have SNL alumni put out? The number must be in the hundreds. Few are classics, but a fair number of them at least offer some laughs. Somebody should have a one or two week festival of nothing but these films, 24 hours a day--buy a general ticket and you can come and go whenever you please. For good measure, toss in the SCTV crew as well. It'd be fun.

Only if it means we don't have to include each of the ones with Jane Curtin playing her supporting role as a mom. Maybe just one (I Love You Man?)

The women of SNL never scored as well in film as the men.

Just watched it about one month ago. Wasn't it something on this blog that triggered the memory and then the desire to see it again? Anyway it had a few good moments and was slightly more ribald than I remembered, but was okay. Then I saw Top Secret which was way more ribald than I remember and was overall flat but had a few hilarious jokes. Top Secret was definitely triggered by something on this blog.

Was Top Secret the one where the French resistance guys had the names of French desserts and the black guy was called "chocolat mousse"

Watched Ghostbusters last night. That has to be in the top three of SNL spawned comedies. I put it ahead of Chevy Chase's Vacation films, and everything by Eddie Murphy. Animal House could be deemed better, and some of Adam Sandler's movies have certainly made more money (though personally I don't like Sandler's comedies that much).

After Ghostbusters and Animal House, I would round out the top three with City Slickers, if you count Billy Crystal as an SNL alum.

I'm probably forgetting something really funny - help me out here. Caddy Shack, Austin Powers, Trading Places, Groundhog Day, & Blues Brothers are probably in the top ten.

Regarding grosses, I believe Animal House, Ghostbusters and Beverly Hills Cop all broke the record at the time for biggest hit comedy. Taking inflation into account, they're probably the biggest hits of all the SNL romps. Even in raw numbers, Ghostbusters and BHC handily beat anything Sandler has done, though the Austin Powers sequels give them a run for their money.

Now I know about SNL and SCTV (although except for John Candy and the McKenzie bros, those guys were mainly supporting roles)- What about Fridays? They seem to be more TV/Cable than movies-Michael Richards and Larry David are the biggest alums but then um Dr Feelgood on 30 Rock nd Melanie Chartoff may have been a voice in the Rugrats movie
