There's an old joke about a thief who steals the credit card of some guy's wife. The guy won't call the cops because it's saving him money. (Sexist jokes used to be comedians' bread and butter. The most famous was probably Henny Youngman's bit where for their anniversary his wife says she's wants to go somewhere she's never been before and he says try the kitchen.)

Anyway, I was reminded of that gag when I read some Italian journalist had fabricated an interview with Gore Vidal. I thought no matter what's in it, how could it possibly hurt Vidal's reputation more than what he actually says.
