For A Song

I thought Captain America: The First Avenger was pretty enjoyable.  One of the fun parts was "Star Spangled Man," a song by Alan Menken and David Zippel used as a 1940s call to patriotism at Captain America's bond rallies.

Sort of reminded me--and I don't think this is a coincidence--of the theme to the Merry Marvel Marching Society.

I liked it too. Marvel Films claims that not only will Cap be in the upcoming Avengers movies, but they may also make additional movies set during World War II. But I don't see how that's possible; there was hardly time for Captain America to have any major-but-unmentioned adventures between the point in the movie when he actually began superheroing for real and the end of the movie. But if anyone can insert new stories between the cracks of older stories, it's Marvel.

I also liked the homage to the classic Kirby cover of the first issue. This was in early 1941, before America was even in the war!

Looking carefully at that cover, it becomes obvious that superhero artists design costumes for visual appeal, not for functionality. The top 25% of Captain America's torso is covered in some kind of leather or chainmail, and the rest of his torso in tights. In other words, he has leather around his shoulders (where he needs mobility) and tights on his heart and stomach (where he needs protection).

At the theatre, everyone stuck around for the post-credits sequence, which was really more a promo for The Avengers. (That's where the word "trailer" comes from--the promos used to come at the end of the film.)

I'm sure Captain America will fit in, but he's not supernaturally powerful, like some of his compatriots--he's just a very strong, well-built guy. (I guess he's sort of like Wolverine--or Wolverine's sort of like him--in that he can regenerate.) And you wouldn't compare his shield to, say, Thor's hammer.

I guess when the Cap was doing that USO tour he was secretly sneaking around attacking the Axis.
