A Page From History
I was about to write something on the Ralph Northam controversy, but I just don't want to get into it now. Maybe some other time. (What I would have said wouldn't have been that different from what Eugene Volokh writes.)
But feel free to leave comments about the story if you like.

I think definitely the lesson to learn here is if you ever do anything dumb when you're young you should never be allowed to have any job after that.
Perfectly reasonable. But it applies only to Democrats, not Republicans.
True. Doesn't matter what Republicans did in the past. All of them must resign now no matter what.
Guy Who Wore Blackface or KKK Hood Still Better Option for African Americans Than GOP
You're not keeping up, New England Guy. He now says he's not in the photo. So I guess he just found it amusing to create a yearbook page with photos of himself except for one that was a photo of two other guy that amused him. Or perhaps someone put that photo on the page without his knowledg3e, and, while he was annoyed, didn't think it was bad enough to make a stink about it.
By the way, just how popular was blackface in 1984?
I agree with New England Guy's general point, though he's got it backwards. It doesn't really matter what a Republican does. They're all better on race than any Democrat, since they don't believe people should be judged by their race, while Democrats have been race now, race forever from the start. As soon as the country realizes this, then the real healing can begin.
My God, did all of you rush to the bathroom closet to find old cans of black shoe polish before you started posting?
I always use burnt cork.
Ah, a connoisseur! I bet you read Nero Wolfe novels.
Just a few days ago, Governor Northrop was asked about Virginia's new abortion law, which removes virtually all restrictions on abortion (it can be done up to the time the mother is dilating, if the abortion is considered necessary for her physical health or mental health). And even past that: if the baby is accidentally delivered alive during the procedure, the new law removes the current obligation of the doctor to treat the newborn baby as a legal person.
As Northrop himself told a radio interview just three days ago:
"So in this particular example, if a mother's in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered, the infant would be kept comfortable, the infant would be resuscitated if that's what the mother and the family desired. And then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother." (Emphasis added.)
None of the Democrats now calling on him to resign complained about this.
Don't get me wrong: I think wearing blackface and posing in KKK outfits is immoral. But I happen to think leaving a newborn baby to die is immoral too. Even if you are pro-choice and think "a woman should control her own body", how is the already-born baby part of her body?
Hey, under the common law, you had a whole year! I'm willing to extend that principal under modern precedents--say, if you're still on your parents insurance at age 26, or if you are named Obama or Clinton, until the age of 75.
Retroactive Abortion. It's for your own good.
So Volokh has a second column about Northam.
Which makes it pretty clear, there must be some photos of Volokh in blackface out there.
Volokh. Sounds Russian.
