People Call Him Maurice

Maurice Williams, of Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, was born on this day in 1938.  He was in the Galdiolas when they recorded the original version of "Little Darlin'."

The band changed their name (actually, they had several names) to the Zodiacs and had their hit, "Stay." The title is somewhat ironic, since at 1:36 it's the shortest #1 song of all.

The diamonds version is a complete front to back ripoff. I had never heard this version. Not quite as lively but all the innovations of rhythm and the "voiceover" are there. The diamonds might have the edge on recording quality but not in innovation.

I consider the Diamonds' version, which was the hit, almost a parody of the original. You could even call it a novelty version (which is fine with me).
