Bush Versus Clinton Is The Most Important Election Ever

Jesse Walker's latest list takes us back to 1992.  Was it a much of a year?  Decide for yourself.

https://jessewalker.blogspot.com/2022/12/our-perot-year-i-have-listed-my.html

Here's his top ten:

1. Unforgiven

2. Glengarry Glen Ross

3. Brother's Keeper

4. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

5. Reservoir Dogs

6. Porco Rosso

7. Candyman

8. Food

9. The Player

10. Swoon

I found Unforgiven so dull back then I haven't been tempted to give it another look.

Glengarry Glen Ross isn't much more than a filmed play, but as such, it's highly entertaining.

Brother's Keeper is pretty good.

David Lynch's Twin Peaks film is his most underrated work.

Reservoir Dogs is a fine film announcing a fine filmmaker.

Porco Rosso is good, if far from Miyazaki's best.

Candyman is perhaps somewhat better than most horror films of the time, but that's not saying much.

Food is a (well done) short.

The Player is an overrated film by Robert Altman.

Still haven't gotten around to Swoon.

Here are Jesse's honorable mentions:

11. Careful

12. Wayne's World

13. My New Gun

14. Prime Suspect 2

15. A Brief History Of Time

16. The Crying Game

17. L.627

18. Barjo

19. Leolo

20. Rock Hudson's Home Movies

11 is sort of odd, even for Guy Maddin, but fascinating. 12 isn't much--I prefer the sketches.  15 is minor but enjoyable.  I wonder if there's much to 16 after the surprise.  I like 17.  I like 20 even more, though I wonder how it plays in today's world.  Haven't seen 13, 18 or 19, and 14 is a TV series.

Other films of 1992 that would make my top ten:

Aladdin

My Cousin Vinny

The Story Of Qiu Ju

Other films of 1992 I liked

Bad Lieutenant, Diggstown, El Mariachi, A Few Good Men, Housesitter, Into The Soup, A League Of Their Own, Love Potion No. 9, Memoirs Of An Invisible Man, Mistress, Police Story 3

Other 1992 films of note:

1991: The Year Punk Broke, Alien 3, Basic Instinct, Batman Returns, Belle Epoque, Bob Roberts, The Bodyguard, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Chaplin, Un Coeur En Hiver, Death Becomes Her, Far And Away, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, Hard Boiled, Hero, Hoffa, Honey, I Blew Up The Kids, Honeymoon In Vegas, Howard's End, Husbands And Wives, Indochine, Into The West, Jamon, Jamon, The Lawnmower Man, The Last Of The Mohicans, Leap Of Faith, Like Water For Chocolate, Lorenzo's Oil, Love Field, The Lover, Luna Park, Malcolm X, The Mambo Kings, Man Bites Dog, Man Trouble, Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky And The Media, The Mighty Ducks, Mister Saturday Night, New Dragon Gate Inn, Noises Off, Passion Fish, Patriot Games, A River Runs Through It, Romper Stomper, Scent Of A Woman, School Ties, Shakes The Clown, Single White Female, Singles, Sister Act, Strictly Ballroom, This Is My Life, Toys, The Waterdance, White Men Can't Jump

Having rewatched My Cousin Vinny pretty recently, I can report that (1) yes, it holds up, even if it isn't top-10-movies good, and (2) if you're thinking this will be a good thing to watch with your young niece and nephew, because it seemed so family-friendly when you saw it on network TV circa 1995, be forewarned that the network cut out a lot of swearing.

I've watched My Cousin Vinny a number of times over the years. It's not only a fine comedy, it's also more realistic about legal procedure than most films set in court. It's a little oddly shaped, since you wait quite a while for the lead to appear, but it's not as if the film is boring before then. Let me add that Marisa Tomei is one of the more deserving Oscar winners.

I've rewatched some of your top ten--Twin Peaks, Reservoir Dogs--a number of times, but the one I've seen most is Glengarry Glenn Ross. I don't necessarily watch it all the way through, but wait for certain moments--especially Alex Baldwin's speech (written for the movie) and Al Pacino's aria of invective.

Would like to make the point that there are (at least) two filmed-plays in Jesse's time and I think he got them in the right order even if only one of them makes my top 20, or even 30, of the year. I saw My Cousin Vinny around when it came out and didn't really care for it though it's obviously not a movie aimed at 12-year-olds. Not the kind of movie I want to spend my limited solo-movie-time re-watching so will have to wait until my wife is in the mood to re-visit. Fell asleep watching Fire Walk With Me in high school and mostly remember Lynch's cameo, would like to see again some day. I'm with LA Guy on Porco Rosso, good but pretty far down the Miyazaki list. Saw but don't remember much of Leolo. Loved Wayne's World when I was twelve, haven't seen or really thought about it since. Really liked Unforgiven but for some reason feel little desire to go back to.

1. The Swordsman II
2. Minbo
3. Naked Killer
4. King of Beggars
5. The Player
6. Hard Boiled
7. Police Story 3
8. Aladdin
9. Careful!
10. Passion Fish
11. Candyman
12. Bob Roberts
13. Juice (good movie helped a lot by the soundtrack)
14. Once Upon a Time in China 2
15. Batman Returns
16. Strictly Ballroom
17. Raising Cain
18. Vacas
19. Unforgiven
20. The Twin Dragons
