Keep 'em Comin'

So far we've had some interesting comments on the controversial art below. It'd be great if we could have more. So let's hear from you. And tell your friends. (Looks like I'll be out a day or two anyway, so keep it going while I'm gone.)

Orthodox Catholic here. It is intended to be offensive and I am offended.

LAGuy's hyper-naive comments are ridiculous. The first piece looks like a fairly bad piece of primitive art. The second is a crucifix (appears to be a standard Catholic bookstore stuff) with a reddish glow and streaks of light. My first reaction is that it was a picture of a crucifix that someone had carried around a long while in their wallet. To view it is not to see the offense.

But it IS offensive and the artist means it to be. The intention of the artist is important. If I bump into somebody by accident or on purpose, it matters. If I get spit on by someone with a cough, I don't like it. If someone intentionally spits on me, I get offended. In fact that person who spits on me WANTS me to be offended. So, looking at these works out of their context is ridiculous.

As to the Christian reaction, there are a lot of people who get offended by a wide variety of things. And among any such group there will be usually two main groups, those that say it is best to ignore it and it will usually go away and the other group will want to fight it very publicly. I actually don't really fall only into one or the other. I know that ignoring sometimes works and fighting sometimes does. I try to make a judgement about which will work best. The idea that Christians should look at these works as if they are respectful or even neutral is silly.

One more thing about the Christian reaction. The previous comments really related to how any offended group reacts to an (intended)offense. Should the Christian reaction be different? Should we turn the other cheek? And if that bit of Scripture applies here, what is turning the other cheek? These are questions that Christians ponder? It seems unlikely that many Christians would propose as a strategy pretending the offense was never meant to be so.
