Darling Nikki

Can't say I'm a big fan of Nikki Finke or her LA Weekly column on the local scene. Yet, I have to admire how her rather silly piece on Michael Kinsley got such a rise out of him. Kinsley, outgoing editor of the LA Times, has the lead letter in the latest Weekly. In it, he calls Finke a "fuddy-duddy" and an "idiot." And that's just the first sentence.

This is almost as much fun as his feud with Susan Estrich. I'm sorry to see him go.

Is this what the blogosphere has wrought? Elitist editorial writers slinging slang and crudities at each other, instead of seriously addressing issues? I'll grant that there are many blogs which only discuss issues, but has the informality of the blog format let Michael KInsley off his leash?

Interesting point. I waa taken aback at the crudeness of Kinsley's attack, though I don't know if I'd blame it on the blogs.

Blogs have introduced, in a general, a greater informality in our national discourse--with so many saying so much so quickly, that was bound to happen. (People always talked this way, and communicated this way in letters and emails--now everyone can see it.) But newspapers and periodicals still have a somewhat higher tone (if not necessarily better content) so I don't think Kinsley or anyone else can say he's just following the lead of blogs, or of the Nikki Finkes of alt weeklies.

I've long been a fan of Kinsley. His TRB column was my favorite back in the pre-net days, when I'd read the New Republic cover to cover. And, since he was so often a contrarian (defending yuppies and Thatcher, attacking Bob Strauss) it cracked me up when such an unpredictable, essentially moderate liberal is considered far left by some of the loose cannons at Fox. I also enjoyed Kinsley going up against Buchanan on Crossfire--the last time I watched CNN regularly--even if he didn't have the greatest TV manner. Then he moved to Seattle to edit Slate and he lost something. He also go sick, which, perhaps, didn't help. I thought he was enlivening the LA Times editorials, but not performing miracles. And while his writing was getting hackier, he could still bother both sides with different views (his ho-hum to the Downing Street Memo(s) got to a lot of people), even if he was relying on cheaper insults and less research.

My guess is 1) he felt ill-treated by Los Angeles, 2) was roasted unfairly by Nikki and 3) was simply responding in language alt-weekly readers understand. Neverthless, I was surprised to see his ferocity and nastiness, thus my post.
