Burning Bright

Now that the season is two-thirds over, it's pretty clear the Tigers are the best team in baseball. They didn't flower early, only to fade--they've kept it up throughout the season. I'm not sure if they've even lost three in a row yet.

They have such a solid lead in their division--over the World Series winning White Sox, a team that would be first in most other divisions--that it would be a disappointment if they didn't make the playoffs.

Detroit has had its share of winners lately, such as the Pistons and the Red Wings, but it's been so long since the Tigers were even a threat, I fear if they go all the way there might be damage (it's a local tradition). You know what? I'm willing to risk it.

Restore The Roar.

The Tigers have been having themselves a great season this year. But, as a White Sox fan, and one of the many that expected/hoped for a fade of some sort, I have to take some small exception to the "long time" comment. 20-odd years is nothing. Ask any Chicago Cub fan in the midst of the 98th consecutive rebuilding year.

The Lions? That's a different story.

The Tigers are doing it with the coaching talent from the 1992 pittsburgh pirates (leyland, mcclendon, van slyke). Not only was 1992 the last time the Pirates went to the playoffs, it was the last time they finished over .500. The Cubs at least are interesting and close enough to break your heart when they blow it. The Buccos of the last 14 years have just been uninspiring and lacking all hope (maybe like the Tigers before this season)

The Tigers last won the World Series in 1984. Before then, 1968. Before then, 1945. I think the way it works is they win once a generation, so Tiger fans always have a memory of what it's like to be on top.

They're due.

This Tiger team is good and the organization has turned around. There is a solid core of excellent young pitchers, so, barring injuries, they should be stellar for the next several years. Will they win a World Series? Who knows, once the playoff starts, it's basically a crap shot...
