"Half of all children are below average, and teachers can do only so much for them."
It is shocking, and yet typical, how easily conservatives abandon children, particularly the least advantaged.

Does anybody question Murray's assumption that he knows what intelligence is? Astudy of people who score high on IQ tests show that they are people who are amazingly good at scoring high on IQ tests.
Spatial relations, word association, and the ability to memorize a great deal of stuff are no doubt wonderful skills at times but do they define intelligence?
Let's hold multiple intelligences for awhile (my guess is studies show that people are multiply intelligent) and go for something more basic: Do you accept that half of all children are below average? Or does MI move us to Lake Wobegone?
He creates a simplistic strawman and then destroys it. I'm in awe.
Education is not that simple.
Even people with a low IQ who try hard can go far.
Even if you have a high IQ and are a scientist or a computer programmer let's say and suddenly your job disappears because the cold war ended or it was outsourced, or technology changed in some fundamental way. How is this intelligent person going to adjust to these external changes? Rewind his or her life and become 10 again?
No, they are going to update their skills and hopefully this is a continual process of lifelong education and self-improvement. Doctors have to keep abreast of developments in their field, other occupations should too, and this is an extension of education.
If one looks for simplistic answers like that mugwort columnist from the AEI did, they're easy to find.
They might not start really succeeding at what they are doing until their mid-30s, to take a worse case, and then go back get a business degree, and succeed.
Even someone who has succeeded mildly well at what they are doing and who suddenly
Jon, did you even read what Murray said? He said exactly what you said. (Except for the part about going back to get a business degree, which seems a bit deluded.)
