Shaking It Up
The Star Trek franchise seems pretty much played out. That's why it's interesting to hear the rumors that the latest Trek film, directed by J.J. Abrams, may have Matt Damon as Kirk, Adrien Brody as Spock and Gary Sinise as McCoy.
First, no one but the originals have ever played these parts. Second, the whole spirit of the enterprise, as it were, was to take little known actors and make them famous through the role. This would be turning everything on its head.
And I like it. Trek is moribund anyway. Let's try something different. Let's make an A film with interesting characters and see what happens.
PS If the plot is about Kirk meeting Spock at the Academy, that's still no good. It cheapens the original Star Trek. See yesterday's comments on Heroes.

I heard this rumor at one of the Star Trek panels at WorldCon in August. According to the story, the Powers That Be at Paramount told Abrams "We'll give you a blank check -- if you want to make a movie, just name it." He replied, "Great. I want to make a Star Trek movie." The response was a huge CRINGE from the PTBs.
I'm less sanguine that this can work than you are. But my reason is the same as yours: I think prequels NEVER work. The one Babylon 5 prequel attempt was awful. Smallville has some nice bits and I actually enjoy watching it, but fundamentally it's a bad show. And I won't even mention the really heinous example....
And isn't Gary Sinise much, much older than Matt Damon? Is his McCoy going to be Kirk's friend, or his mentor?
Kelley is 11 years older than Shatner. Sinise is 15 years older than Damon. Not that big a stretch.
You mean De Kelly was eleven years older....
*sniff*
