The Boy In The Bubble

A while back, ColumbusGuy and I were discussing whether GeeDub gives sincere answers to press questions. The latest example I can cite to that the President either sees the world through a different set of filters than the rest of us, or happily gives wholly insincere answers, is:

President Bush said Monday that the Congressional testimony of Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales last week, roundly panned by members of both parties, had “increased my confidence in his ability to do the job.”

Umm, no, Sir. I simply do not believe you. Saying it did not meaningfully decrease your confidence, fine, I can buy it. But unless the "job" you are talking about is evading questions, increased confidence is simply out of the question.

AG Gonzales said that he did not recall the answer to a question at least 40 times before lunch (according to the Daily Show), including questions about what took place at a meeting he had attended 4 months ago, questions about when he made decisions that he specifically recalled making, etc. etc. etc. I watched about an hour of the testimony, and it was frankly painful. Anyone who came away with increased confidence in the veracity of the witness should be given a lifetime exemption from jury duty for congenital inability to recognize evasiveness.

I think the man means what he says. Alberto's job was to show the contempt the Prez has for Congress. They succeeded.

Invoking the Imus Observation- you can't get anywhere by trying to agree with and apologize to your critics, they already think you're toast. The admin's only option is to dig in & fight harder and keep up the faith of the hard-cores who still like them-compromise at this point will win no converts and only convey weakness to the loyal.

Yes it does sound like the bunker in 1945

The bunker in 1945? Let's not be silly. This is just like Clinton digging in after committing several felonies (did QueensGuy believe him when he said his impeachment was a good day?--of course, this is Clinton, and we use different standards). The only difference now is that Gonzales didn't do anything wrong and the entire set of hearings are trumped up.

Yes I broke the rule on Hitler references - I should have said the White House in the summer of 74. I was trying to emphasize hopelessness not Nazidom

NG, you're conceding that Nixon wasn't Hitler? Take a lie-down. Must be an off day.

SWMBCg, etc.

In case that was a serious question, no, I did not believe Clinton when he said his impeachment was a good day. I only saw it in print at the time, so didn't know whether he was being ironic or simply lying (again). Just like I don't know whether Gonzales was lying or simply is the most absent-minded person in Washington without Alzheimer's.
