Theological Discussion

I was at my favorite place, recently, the 99 Cent Store, and the guy ahead of me was buying some alcoholic beverage. I heard the following dialogue.

Customer: It's okay to drink, you know. That's what the Bible says.

Cashier: You don't have to tell me that, I just got back from church.

Customer: The first miracle in the Bible was turning water into wine.

Cashier: That's right, Jesus loves you no matter what you do.

My head hurts.

Ten years ago I was in line behind a lady with a kid who was about seven. She was talking with the cashier (who was scanning her groceries), and her boy was looking for something to do and reading the headlines in the tabloids.

Suddenly the boy turns to his mom and asks, "Mommy, is there a heaven?" The mom, without even turning to face him, said casually, "If you like, dear," and went back to her conversation.

I'm sure the mother forgot about this exchange immediately. Did the boy? I wonder.

I've heard stupider things about religion. I'd like to meet the mom

I'm reading (OK --listening to so I don't have any footnotes or index))"The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins--and I wanted to know the source for one of his stories- He says John Lennon's "Imagine" was re-dubbed to replace the line "and no religion too" with "and one religion too" somewhere in evangelical America. Does anyone have the skinny on this?
(He also mentioned an English ad campaign for one of his works that show the NY skyline with the twin towers intact under the heading "Imagine No Religion")

I'll write something more for the main page when I finish it

Maybe somebody, somewhere--on some extremely small scale--changed the words to "Imagine" this way, but it wasn't done on any widespread basis or I'm pretty sure I would have heard about it.

By the way, for my personal opinion on the song, check out my entry in our archives on December 13, 2004

Well, the number of buildings that have been destroyed for religious purposes is a lot smaller than the number of buildings that have been built for religious purposes.

This sort of parallel universe idea is silly. If religion had vanished in the year 1900, 90% of Westerners would have become communists or anarchists. On the other hand, without the tradition of the Hebrew prophets calling for social justice, would there have ever been movements to help the poor (either the wholesome kind or the twisted Marxist kind)?
