Feat Of Clay

I was a bit surprised to find Andrew "Dice" Clay has a reality show on VH1. (Not that I'd ever watch it--I avoid this type of show like the plague.) I guess he's going for a comeback.

About 15 years ago, he was as big as a stand-up could get. His shows were like rock concerts. But the perceived ugliness of his material had plenty of people hoping he'd fail, and eventually he did.

He's actually not a bad actor. Check out his turns in Pretty In Pink and One Night At McCool's. But it's as a comedian that he'll be remembered, if he's remembered.

I'll give him credit for one thing. He's the rarest of comedians--one who can make me laugh without any wit.

He's also very good in "Casual Sex?" (question mark added because AIDS became a big deal between filming and release). He's actually likable and vulnerable in that film. A sweet performance that seems to come out of nowhere.

He did a bit in his act about 5 movie stars as Boy Scouts on a camping trip - it was Stallone, Travolta, Pacino, DeNiro and Eric Roberts (there's an "oh, how the might have fallen" or "which of these things just doesn't belong" joke to be made there). It was an impressive bit. He managed to morph nicely from one to the next, and the impersonations were damn good (easily Kevin Spacey good, and Kevin steals his from other actors anyway). You are right, there is an actor underneath all the image. He's not going to take parts away from Philip Seymour Hoffman, but I'd love to see him do a little guest spot on "The Sopranos" or something fun like that.

I think he appeared on Chicago Story, which is sort of like being on The Sopranos.
