Hooray

I heard el presidente's press conference today, and he was fabulous. Moreover, it filtered through what little press I heard about it reasonably well. Usually they ignore his substance and harp on whatever will hurt him or help the Dems.

Of course, it's just one conference. It takes a sustained effort to win the race when you're wearing 10-lb ankle bracelets.

C'mon, that's not fair. Bush's inability to articulate a thought without prepared text is at least the equivalent of 15lb ankle bracelets, 'specially given how rarely he attempts the exercise. My favorite was in the Bush-Kerry debate when he was unable to come up with a single thing he regretted doing in his first term.

That was actually one of his better moments and one of the press's worst, exceeded only by the April 2004 press conference where they asked him about 21 times of some 40 or so questions whether he was ready to apologize.

I submit this as evidence that press bias, and indeed all political bias, is potentially incurable. A moment I viewed as perfectly exemplifying Bush's utter lack of introspection, humility, or eloquence, at a time when I was affirmatively trying to give the guy the benefit of the doubt (because I so disliked Kery), ColumbusGuy saw as one of his better moments. Well, I guess it makes for good Ham'N'Egg blogging.

If I didn't know better, QG, I'd say you thought anything done in those instances by either Bush or the press was sincere.

The press was after Democrat commercials, full stop. The president was denying them that, full stop.

And you fault him for not pulling a Clinton: "I regret that, despite having worked harder than I have ever worked in my life, and despite reaching out in more ways than anyone--anyone--ever before had even thought about doing, that my opponents were so incalcitrant and intent on the politics of personal destruction at a time when a lot of good people were giving their hearts to this country. (Silence while David Gregory wipes tears from his eyes.) I regret that. I regret that bitterly."

Of course, when Clinton says such things, it leads to a panel debate on whether Ken Starr is a sex fiend or an alien; when Bush says it, it leads to an indictment of Scooter Libby and front page transcripts of Newt Gingrich's 900-number phone calls.

SWMBCg, etc.
