May Or May Not

Looks like it'll be the biggest moneymaking May ever for Hollywood, with the third chapter of Shrek, Pirates Of The Caribbean, and Spider-Man opening, and I couldn't be less excited. I found the second chapters of these films weak to exruciating, so I don't hold out much hope.

Still, there is something to be said for the experience of a packed theatre filled with anticipation. Who knows, maybe I'll be surprised.

Agreed that the 2's did not live up to the 1's for any of these films. Though perhaps understandably POTC had great audience vibe as it had such a built in audience. But maybe the 3's will do better. I am thinking at least 1 of the 3 3's will be very good. I doubt it will be Spiderman as the previews seem to center on the darker side of Spidey. This is always considered groundbreaking to look at the darker side or the human side of our superhero. I think it is crazy. Apart from the foolish Manicheism, we did not come to watch Ordinary People. We go to the theatre to watch a superhero--to dream of flying and courageous action and a whole lot of things that WE DON'T HAVE, not a lot of troubles that we do.

You bring up a good point about the overdone-ness of dark/human side themes. But for Spidey it's different because this hero is so very young. For me, 2 worked because it was believeable (and heartbreaking but not tiresome) that a kid would be so conflicted and would want to be like other kids.

Because they had inner conflicts, the Marvel heroes represented something new. Spider-Man was the greatest of these heroes. Look at his origin--he turned his back on the good side of his powers and because of that his uncle died. Later, his boss thinks he's a villain. Then, while crimefighting, his girlfriend dies. (Note the first movie avoids this tragic choice.)

I think the Peter Parker stuff in the Spidey movies (especially the first one) works pretty well, but the films let us down in the action sequences. I also didn't like the plot in the second film where he starts losing his powers. The third film looks like more of the same.

Irene, I linked to you a couple days ago. I'm surprised you didn't comment.
