Big Week
Well, this is it, the final week of the prime time season. Of particular interest are the finales of Heroes and Lost.
Heroes is sort of a lighter version of Lost. They're both serials about a group of seemingly (at first) ordinary people finding themselves in an extraordinary situation. But even before I've seen their finales I know they'll be very different.
The Heroes finale will be a real finale. At least it better be. The whole season we've been waiting for the heroes to take on the supervillain (Sylar) and save New York--indeed, the world. If the producers don't definitively deal with these issues, a lot of fans will be angry. Their main trouble is to set up next season, rather than just end this one, because once the central problem is solved, a serial needs something to take its place. (It's what destroyed Twin Peaks.)
Lost, on the other hand, as big as the finale will be (and the producers have promised a game-changer) is still in the middle of its storyline, so, guaranteed, no matter what answers they give, or characters they kill, they will leave us as uncertain and confused as ever.
That I don't mind. Lost is in it for the long haul. But I must say if they kill Locke, I won't be happy. The only thing that could make me less happy is if they leave Locke's status unknown (like they did in last season's finale).

They may have some surprises up their sleeves, but there's no way the producers on Lost won't deal with the Locke issue. What I'm worried about is it will be some sort of stupid Gandalf solution.
From what I've heard, Heroes originally intended to wind up the stories of all this season's heroes and start next season with a new cast. the apparent death of Linderman last week sort of fits that pattern. But when they realized how popular many of the characters have become (especially Hiro), they realized they would lose a lot of audience if they kill everyone off at the end of this season. Still, I expect some major blood shed. here are my predictions:
Nathan - dead
DL - dead
Claude - dead
Ando - dead (not really a hero, but still)
Candace - dead
Mr. Nakamura - maybe dead (I'm not sure if Sulu can get a full time gig now - but has been great seeing him)
Molly or Micah - they'll kill one kid - probably Molly
Living to fight another season will be Peter, Nikki/Jessica, Mrs. Petrelli (new villain?) and of course Hiro and Sylar (though Sylar may appear dead and come back as a surprise).
I wonder if you can lay bets on stuff like this in Vegas?
I've complained in the past that there are too many heroes in the show, so I hope they do cull the crowd a bit. Last week had a high death toll, so it wouldn't be a surprise if it continued. But you need a certain amount of continuity if you want viewers to keep watching.
I have no idea who's going to die tonight, but it's clear that Hiro has become the most popular character, so he'll stick around. In fact, he's so popular I can see them letting sidekick Ando survive.
I think the second favorite hero is Claire, so maybe she'll stick around. (Her dad's not a hero--I'm not sure what he is--but he's highly popular as well).
I bet they thought too-cute Peter would be everyone's favorite, but I find him tiresome and I'd just as soon they take him out (and leave brother Nathan around).
And isn't DL dead already? I think the whole DL/Niki (Jessica)/ Micah triangle was not a fan favorite, so I suppose all of them can go. If a kid's has to die, might as well be Micah. However, Ali Larter is the hottest babe in the show, so I hope she survives.
For that matter, Candace is hot (in present form), and has a cool talent, so I'd hate to see her go, but I guess most of the bad guys gotta die.
Which brings us to Sylar. I don't care how cool fans think he is, or how popular the producers believe he's become--he's the main bad guy and there needs to be closure. If he comes back, that'd be annoying.
Anyway, I'll find out the answers in a few hours.
Well, my predictions fell flat. Nobody is definitely dead as of last night! Even Sylar, who was pretty convincingly killed, was dragged into the sewer by someone - who knows what will happen. And DL lived!!! What, is Suresh a speed surgeon who could repair a bullet to the chest with a jack knife and scotch tape while under fire in a hallway!!!!!!
Sorry, I did like the episode. I hope Nathan and/or Peter are dead (but I doubt it). parkman will come back and I sort of like him. I also like the foreshadow of a villain "worse than Sylar" that Molly is afraid to look for. And Hiro in ancient Japan - that hould be fun!
I thought the finale was one of the weaker episodes this season. After promising an apocalyptic showdown, it was an anti-climax. I figured there'd either be a titanic fight between Peter and Sylar, or all the heroes would combine to take him down, but neither really happened.
In addition, as Denver Guy notes, they didn't really have the nerve to kill a single character. Five may have died, or they may all have survived!
(Also, my least favorite thing about the show--everyone either has a power or is in on it--got even worse, when retroactively we learned Richard Roundtree was part of the whole deal; this cheapens the whole hero thing, it doesn't make it more exciting.)
Anyway, the show is still fun, and I'll check it out next season.
One more thing. I hope Peter is gone. I doubt they'll do it (he can heal himself like Claire, for one thing), but having one guy with all the powers is no fun.
Yes, as you say, once Peter stops being the insecure baby his mother accurately describes him as, he will be Superman in a room of Daredevils (to mix my DC/Marvel analogies). They will have to kill him or disable him in some other way (the old mental block trick could work for a season, I guess).
