Newsflash: Believers Believe Their Beliefs

Some are trying to make hay over Ann Coulter's statements on The Big Idea. She thinks things would be better if everyone were Christian and feels Jews "perfect" themselves when they convert.

As anyone who reads Pajama Guy knows, I'm no fan of Coulter, but I don't find these statements particularly controversial. If you believe in your religion, and think it's the best or perhaps only correct one, why shouldn't you want everyone to join in? Diversity is no boon when others are in error.

If you've got a problem with Coulter, who seems to me to be stating merely what religious people are supposed to believe, then your real problem is more likely with religion.

What she did "wrong" was say in public something that members of every proselytizing religion necessarily say in private among themselves. I.e. that accepting their particular god is the only way to achieve wonderful blah blah blah and avoid the other negative blah blah blah. Indeed, in some families the heartfelt desire not to let one's dear atheist relatives burn for all eternity .

There was an interesting piece (in the NYTimes?) a few months ago discussing whether there is an inherent, unresolvable conflict between belief in such a religion and support for the separation of church and state.

Got to think Ann Coulter for something besides flashing skinny legs-- making clear the implications of her supernatural beliefs and those shared by her crowd
