Tonight Won't Be Just Any Night
Due to the writer's strike, NBC has been showing old episodes of The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, some from his earliest years. They're just like I remember 'em--pretty bad.
A few people have even suggested it's an attempt to embarrass Jay.

Was it his idea or an NBC exec to make him act so hyper all the time?
Remember when Jay was a guest on Letterman on NBC? That hyper-ness was part of his shtick and made him fun to watch. That never really translated into being the host.
Every comedian has his persona, but acting hyper is often a sign of desperation.
Jay jumped the shark when he came back from a stint in NYC where he'd been in a smaller theater, and close enough to the audience to high-five them upon entering. He rebuilt his LA theater to duplicate this and has been high-fiving them ever since. Ironically, this is when his ratings took off and he overcame Letterman. It is also when I experienced another episode of "Why don't I agree with America?"
I remember when Letterman was beating Leno in the ratings. It was the last time the world made sense.
And Clinton was President. ;-)
