Death Watch?

Many are calling on Huckabee to drop out, since, statistically speaking, he will not wrest the nomination from McCain. Is he sticking around because, as he says, he's got nothing better to do?

I don't want to be gruesome, but perhaps Huckabee figures something might happen to McCain. I'm not saying he's consciously hoping for it, and I'm not necessarily saying death, but perhaps an accident or stroke. Then he'd be the last man standing.

Assuming a purely personal viewpoint for Huckabee as opposed to party success (which may or may not be true), why should Huckabee quit- He's having fun, he's getting plenty of airtime and while not having a chance at then nomination, has succeeded beyond anyone's expectations and there is a large contingent of the repubs who are unhappy with a McCain candidacy, so he meets a need. If he drops out now, he may drop out forever

On the other hand, there is really no good reason for him to remain if he cares about the repubs winning in November. He is basically strengthening a separatist movement within the party. This movement will either break away from the main effort (probably not formally, but through sitting on its hands) or will force compromises on McCain which damage both his reputation as straight talker and his ability to get back the center which the party seems to have lost.

It's funny you say the Repubs have lost the ability to get back to the center when they've just nominated a guy who is famous for going across the aisle (as was Bush) while the Dem voters can't even stomach the mild centrism of the successful Bill Clinton years.
