Does It Still Count As PDS?
If you focus on her record? Note comment 4, as well. Hey, now maybe both sides will actually focus on relevant history rather than lipstick and hockey and other foolishness. Nah, probably not.

My guess is that most of the "assertions" by Mr. Egan (and just who is Timothy Egan, anyway? Why don't they post a little blurb about the person writing the editorial so we can know if he (or she) has any credibility or not?) can and will be refuted.
But I agree that the voters would be better served if people focused on the candidates' records and not just their statements. Leave the rhetoric aside and look at what they've actually done in office and with whom they've associated.
I really don't understand what you think is the point of this. I can show you lots of slams against her. While we're at it, what's so special about comment 4?
Well, I guess anon's answer to my titular question is yes. The point is that they're not slams based on her family, her church, her looks, her hunting, etc. etc. etc. They're accusations of poor leadership based on what she did in her capacity as governor and mayor. And comment 4 lays out a similar attack based on Obama's acts as a politician. Same reasoning, see?
Frankly I think the "with whom they've associated" part in both the article, the article comments, and VG's comment above is disingenuous. I'm friends with lots of folks I wouldn't put on my political or professional CV, but I understand their limitations and can accept that there's still some worthwhile characteristics they possess for some circumstances.
She had an 80% approval rating as governor, which means that you can talk to the 20% who would characterize her as a failure. They need to make better arguments than this one for their case, I'd say.

I think the privacy/public interest analysis changes when you are nominated for high office.
I don't think I'm the one being disingenuous here.
Huh? Joe Biden went after Bork and Thomas for who they associated with? Because I assumed the context of the second thing I said there was their conduct that was subject to additional scrutiny, not the people with whom they associated. I didn't pay that much attention to the Bork or Thomas confirmation hearings -- was that an issue in either one?

No one is talking about people you see once a year at Christmas or people who "just live on your street" as Obama so glibly tried to write off his relationship with Bill Ayers.
Where do you draw the line between conduct and association? It's not just that Obama "knows" people like Tony Rezko, Bill Ayers or Jeremiah Wright. In the case of Rezko and Ayers, he has had business and/or political dealings with them that stretch back more than 20 years. Wright has been his spiritual "mentor" for at least that long.
How important these associations are is a matter for discussion. But in Obama's case, in part because he has the thinnest resume of any Presidential candidate in modern history, they are especially relevant.
