Uniformity

I understand why sports uniforms were created--when two teams take the field, they need to tell each other apart. That they've grown into symbols and colors we root for is secondary. (For an enjoyable tour of ugly uniforms, go here.)

So I was thinking--why don't they let volleyball players wear whatever they want? There's no chance of anyone confusing who's on what side.

Because sports is about fascist military indoctrination and having everyone look the same is in furtherance thereof.

On the other hand bikini volleyball would be fun to watch

Olympic highlights:

(1) When one of the male beach volleyball players lost the lenses to his sunglasses, he kept the empty frames on. One of the commentators asked why. The other answered "endorsement deal."

(2) Learning that there is a rule governing the maximum amount of skin female beach volleyball players are permitted to cover (according to NPR, anyway).

(3) seeing the bikini-clad Chinese cheerleaders come out between sets. Can you imagine that during any other Olympic sport?

Better'n'Hooters, indeed!
