The Best Argument I've Heard For The Auto Bailout
This is a paraphrase of what someone told me. Essentially, there's gonna be a bailout anyway. If this Congress doesn't do it, a more heavily Democrat Congress with a new President will do it next year. Get it done now and you'll end up with a more even-handed deal,

By even-handed I mean the pain of any restructuring will be distributed among all parties involved.
Well, the current administration (remember them?) was solidly behind the current deal, if you're looking for evidence of bipartisan even-handedness.
I still think it's a pointless exercise -- if they need to substantially restructure, bankruptcy is the appropriate forum. No car czar without the powers of a bankruptcy court judge is going to make that happen.
I agree. The main point of the argument is the bailout will happen anyway, so get the best one possible.
I don't get your argument- why should the group who have presided over the current meltdown do better than those just elected. They've proved so nimble at economic matters so far?
There's not a single thing about the above comment that I understand.
We need to come up with a name for this idea, the argument, "It is possible to do something more stupid, so do this stupid thing."

How about "bullshit"?
It has a corollary, BTW. By following this advice, you make the more stupid entity appear relatively smarter than it is and increase the duration of its survival. I'm having a hard time seeing how anyone is better off under this scenario.
Oh, well. I had the same objection to "compassionate conservative," but that turned out fine for all concerned.

Another word is politics, where you make compromises. A bad bird in the hand might be better than two vultures in the bush.
