Posner Gone Wild

Over at The Becker-Posner Blog, the Judge is taking no prisoners in his discussion of the Future of Conservatism:

For myself, I would be happy to see conservatism exit from the political scene--provided it takes liberalism with it.

The funny thing about Posner's pragmatism is I don't ever see anyone agreeing with it. So just how pragmatic is this approach?

(You might want to check out Becker's response as well.)

Is Posner writing comedy? This is priceless:

Thoughtful conservatives, already disturbed by the accumulation of blunders of the current Administration (the Iraq WMD, Katrina, the Justice Department scandals), culminating in its uncertain response to the financial crisis, were appalled at the iconic status that Joe the Plumber attained in the Republican campaign, the wild rumors spread by the conservative bloggers and talk-radio hosts, and the intellectual vacuity of many Republican candidates and advocates. The Republican Party seemed to have descended to anti-intellectualism--to deriding highly educated people who speak in complete sentences as "elitists," as compared to the down-to-the-earth ignorance of Joe and his ilk--which sorts badly with the strong intellectual tradition of conservatism.

What exactly did Joe stand for except a standard tax complaint that fits squarely into Posner's libertarian group (1)? Sounds as if the good judge is applying for a post to the big court. I'd say Cass has that locked up already, and Obama's certainly savvy enough to appoint younger socialist Turks to the penultimate legislature. (The ICC would be the first. Let's hope they're both pragmatic, in any case.)

SWMBCg, etc.

C'mon, CG, you have to know that "speak in complete sentences" is code for "Sarah Palin." This has nothing to do with Joe W., who was consistently well-spoken, if sometimes ignorant.

Here's another Onion headline that tickled me:

Republican Party, Average Working Joe Bid One Another Adieu Until 2012. Also.

Hmm. Did you link to the right comment?

(Code word: Platili. I think it's an adjective meaning "platitudinous.")

Actually no, I didn't. I was trying to get the one above it, about the parent of the middle-schooler. I greatly enjoy people who speak to adolescents like they're something more than large infants.
