Dash It All

No, no, no. This isn't the way to do things. Tom Daschle has pulled out of consideration for Secretary Of Health And Human Services. No surprise--when The New York Times calls for a democrat to withdraw, things have gotten pretty bad.

But as far as I'm concerned, except in extreme cases, the President should get the people he wants. They're there to do his bidding, after all, and if he's unhappy with how they serve (whether or not related to their problem) he can fire them.

A little corruption in office is not a good thing, but incomparably worse are the bad laws and policies our leaders support. That's what the Times should be editorializing about, and that's what the voters should care about.

Though we may never know for sure, I strongly suspect that Obama (Emanuel) asked Daschle to step out. Daschle would have been confirmed if nothing more was discovered. I believe there were MoveOn.Org'ers who were not particularly happy with Daschle anyway, and I predict we will end up with a far more left secretary in Daschle's place.
