"You couldn’t have a starker contrast between the multiple layers of checks and balances [at ‘60 Minutes’] and a guy sitting in his living room in his pajamas writing.”
If you find it intriguing, you should first watch the Firefly TV series -- one of the greatest shows ever, and tragically cancelled before the first season was finished. The Serenity movie was a sequel to Firefly, which (mostly) completed the story from the series.
Firefly was stupendous; Serenity was very very good.
I'm still amazed that no one at Fox realized - not just how good the series already was - the inherent potential in what it could become. The range of stories Firefly could have explored over a typical five-year run was enormous.
In many respects, it was Joss Whedon's update of Gene Roddenberry's original concept for Star Trek - "a wagon train to the stars".
Whatever moron (or morons) gave the order to cancel the series deserves to be beset by Reavers.
In one of George Lucas's many revisions of his Star Wars movies, he change the bar scene where Han Solo shoots Greedo. He added an extra shot from Greedo prior to Han's shot, so that the innocent souls in the audience wouldn't have to be scandalized by seeing our hero shooting first.
Joss once commented that Malcolm Reynolds was "my response to Greedo shooting first".
I find that many people (including myself) don't get into the show on first viewing. All nine characters are fairly major, and he introduces them all at once. So you have to watch a few episodes to get to know them well. Or at least I did.
I loved the movie Serenity, and that was without having seen Firefly. I just recently noticed that Firefly is available in its entirety at fancast.com, so it is my plan to enjoythe series for the first time this summer, and then buy the Serenity DVD.
