Perception

I was thinking about The Doors. As much as I love their music, you gotta admit their lyrics can be pretty dopey. (And yet it's the Lizard King's half-baked mysterious style that makes them so much fun.)

For instance, I was listening to one of my favorites, the last song they recorded, "Riders On The Storm." I'm still with it when Morrison say we're thrown into this world like "a dog without a bone," but then when he says it's like "an actor out on loan" he loses me.

It only gets worse in the second verse. First he talks about a killer on the road. Is it still storming? I hope the killer has an umbrella. Next he notes the killer's brain is squirming like a toad. A bit too graphic, but at least he's still on subject. Suddenly he's talking about taking a holiday with your kids. I think he's referring to taking a car trip where you pick up a hitchhiker who then kills you, so why not just say it?

The third verse gives advice to women, telling them to love their men. Helpful, I guess, but isn't it a bit off-topic?
