That's Why You Play The Game

I hadn't checked the odds, but if you would have asked me for the odds on Mark Sanford's gubernatorial tenure outlasting Sarah Palin's, I would have guessed around 1000:1. I am curious about her actual rationale, because the stated one -- being a lame-duck for the next 18 months would be a disservice to the Alaskan voters -- is not credible.

Another GOP 'rising star' bites the dust- the Friday press conference was a truly an exercise in the bizarre (the only redeeming quality of which was that it bumped some the Michael Jackson coverage off the air for a bit). Her supporters don't want to talk about it and her detractors don't have to talk about it.

Well don't count on anything yet, Sanford might be gone by the 26th.

What's next - a Mitt Romney scandal?- I was going to suggest something involving the Latter Day Saints' prohibition on hot beverages, but I was reminded that as Gov, Mitt had bravely held a soft drink-tasting & fund-raising party upon the introduction of Vanilla Coke at his stately Belmont manor thus cleverly preempting any scandal born of that particular vice. (I recall the wretched refuse of the Fourth Estate loudly bemoaned the absence of an open bar).

Her anti-lame-duck explanation is mindboggling:

I thought about how much fun some governors have as lame ducks: travel around the state, to the Lower 48 (maybe), overseas on international trade – as so many politicians do. And then I thought – that’s what’s wrong – many just accept that lame duck status, hit the road, draw the paycheck, and “milk it”. I’m not putting Alaska through that – I promised efficiencies and effectiveness! That’s not how I am wired. I am not wired to operate under the same old “politics as usual.”

The logic is as follows: (1) If I serve out this term, I will be a lame duck. (2) Many other politicians just "milk" their lame duck status instead of doing actual work. (3) I oppose politics as usual. (4) Therefore, I resign.

Shouldn't # 4 be, "Therefore, I will do actual work as governor for the next 18 months, instead of going on junkets"?
