It's All Greek To Them

The Wikipedia entry for actress Ivana Miličević notes she attended "Athens High School in Troy, Michigan."

I grew up near Troy but I can't recall Athens High School, though it's a fairly big place. But more important, why name a school Athens in Troy?

According to the website, their nickname is the Red Hawks. Suppose its more mellifluous than the "the swift-footed Greeks."

Do they have a rival Sparta High too?

According to Wikipedia, here are famous alumni:

Martin Klebba, American Actor, known from Pirates of the Caribbean films.

Ivana Miličević, television and film actress.

Tomo Miličević, guitarist, 30 Seconds to Mars.

Timmy O'Neill, former Notre Dame football player (aka "Tiny Tim").

Bridget Regan, musician, "Flogging Molly".

No Larry Chin.

matt abro was a great three-sport athlete who graduated about four years ago and has a chance at professional baseball.

troy is a snooty place, so naming the school troy athens is their way of thumbing their noses at (uneducated) others who would not get the reference...

Sounds to me like the citizens of Troy don't get the reference.
