We've Had Our Phil
A week ago I missed the birthday of Phil Hellmuth. I hope that didn't make him mad.
The guy's actually a pretty big jerk. But to be fair, he really can't help himself. He's got so much passion it just boils over. He is a great player, but he seems to think that means no one is allowed to outplay him, or even be luckier.
Even people who hate him have to admit he makes a poker tournament a lot more exciting.

The standard response you hear to all this is: "But away from the table, Phil is a really nice guy. Really." As if this excuses his behavior at the table.
It doesn't.
It doesn't matter how nice a person he is away from poker, how great a family guy he is, how much he gives to charity...
...at the table he is a 6'4" A**hole.
And there's no excuse for it.
And that includes things like "smart (?) self-promotion" and "putting opponents on tilt."
Further, the tournament directors cut Phil WAY too much slack because he's famous. It's an obvious and ugly double-standard in poker.
Phil now claims he's retiring the Poker Brat and turning a new leaf, even having gone so far as to hire a "life coach". I hope he turns the corner soon...
...because he's got a LOT of world-class A**holery to make up for.
