Song Of The Times

I was talking to an old-time rock and roller who noted her favorite song was "So In Love."  Really, Cole Porter's number from Kiss Me Kate?

Later, I realized she must have meant "So Much In Love" by The Tymes.

Either way, great song.

Do you know if Billy Joel's "The Longest Time" is an explicit homage to the Tymes' "So Much in Love. Joel's tune seems a slightly rearranged (and slightly faster) version of the earlier song.

If it wasn't authorized, I wonder if the Tymes thought about suing Joel (if Harrison could go down for "Crackerbox Palace," why not?)

The song is from Joel's album An Innocent Man, which is a tribute to the music he loved growing up, including doo-wop. "The Longest Time" and "So Much In Love" share a style, but not a melody, so even if it evokes The Tymes, there's no lawsuit. (As I've noted in the past, my favorite Billy Joel song is "Uptown Girl" because it sounds more like a Four Seasons song than a Joel song.)

I've never heard of Harrison being sued for "Crackerbox Palace." Perhaps you're thinking of "My Sweet Lord," which uses, note for note, the melody of "He's So Fine." I'll give Harrison the benefit of the doubt and believe he did it subconsciously.

My mistake, you are right - I meant My Sweet Lord.

I think the bridges are different. You might enjoy this YouTube comparison of the songs:

Maybe then we should insert the bridge from "Free As A Bird" which takes the melody and some of the words from "Remember (Walking In The Sand."
