Blood Libel

Sarah Palin's new video about the Tucson shootings is going viral in part because she accuses her accusers of "blood libel." My guess is her speechwriter cribbed it from this guy. My further guess is that neither one is trying to Godwin the debate, but rather both are ignorant of the historical context. Well, that's my hope anyway.

"This guy"? You don't know Glenn Reynolds and Instapundit? Pajamasmedia? You should spend a LOT less time with the NYT.

SWMBCg.

p.s. Did you catch ABC news "reporting" that Sarah Palin has "found a way" to become part of the Tucson story? Next I'm expecting Rush Limbaugh will be making political hay out of it.

Not to worry, though: I heard NPR report this morning that President Obama is going to jump into his role as "national healer."

CG here again:

NRO has your back on this one. You'll have to extend your charge of historical ignorance a bit.

Five bucks says the counter-punch won't explicitly be that it's like black people calling each other "nigger", but that'll be the gist of the argument.

Re Prof. Reynolds, I got annoyed with him several years ago when he abandoned the Libertarian party. Thus he gets the "this guy" treatment.

(One of) My favorite Onion stories ever: The Libertarian Party National Convention held in a campus apartment, I think in Madison, with photo: two guys on a couch, a 50 year old small business owner in business suit and a 19 year old white rastafarian smoking marijuana.

"Blood libel" isn't nearly as offensive a term as "eliminationist rhetoric" which the left uses only a bit less often than "the".

As Alan Dershowitz has explained "Blood Libel" has become a generic term that means outrageous lies, usually calling someone responsible for deaths.

Frankly the historical context of the "blood libel" will I think be forgotten but the fact that in what was supposed to to be a thoughtful answer to charges of overheated sometimes rhetoric, the only word remembered will be "blood"

I listened to what she had to say. I then listened to Obama's speech later that night. Oratorical skill matters, and her chance of getting the 2012 nomination just decreased by 25%.
