Advise Or

Sensing 2012 is no lock, Democrat pundits are starting to give Obama advice on how to win the election.  I have no idea what Obama should do, but if I could tell him anything, it'd be to ignore the pundits. For instance, look at Jonathan Chait's latest in The New Republic.  He identifies with his side so strongly that he seems to believe that merely reminding voters which one on the ballot is a Republican will have them running into Obama's arms.

He's especially funny in his outrage at Obama's most likely opponent--"Here is an important fact about Romney that nobody ever mentions: He does not have an economic plan." Yes, and we all remember Obama's deeply detailed plan.  I believe it went "Hope and Change and I'm whatever you think I am."

But the difference is that Romney sells himself generally as the man with a plan-that his investment banker experience gives him special knowledge to deal with the economy. An opponent only has to show there's no there there to dispell the image.

As an appeal "hope and change" is a vaguer concept harder to disprove than "I am the man with specialized knowledge who can fix a very specific program"

No candidate will detail a plan a year in advance of an election - there is no benefit. First, as time passes, the plan will certainly have to altered to address new facts on the ground. Second, a year's advance notice gives all opponents too much time to attack the plan (since the plan can't be implemented and its actual results evaluated).

So I would agree, Romney, if he is the R candidate, will have to to announce a plan - preferably a month or two before the election. However, Obama has perfected the strategy of never announcing a plan, even after election. The strategy was created (I say facetiously) by Richard Nixon, who had a secret plan to end the war in Vietnam.

I'd be grateful if you could send me Obama's economic plan as of now.
