I have never had a true appreciation for poetry. In my English 101 class freshman year, we had one assignment that allowed us to either write a five page paper about a poem, or write a poem. The idea was to encourage us all to write a poem. And I really tried - I thought I came up with a great topic (the thoughts of a man approaching the gallows), I used alliteration and stuck to a certain meter. I got a C+, and I remember thinking the comments in no way informed me why my poem was showed less quality than others, or how to improve it. After Freshman year, I directed my English major toward expository writing.
