What's In The Daily News?
Michael McKean, presently appearing on Broadway in The Best Man, was hit by a car on the Upper West Side (of Manhattan, not McKean). And how is he identified in the New York Daily News headline? "Actor Michael McKean of 'LaVerne & Shirley.'"
There's no question that show introduced him to the public at large, and I suppose it's probably still his best known role, but the show's been off the air for almost 30 years. Since then he's been a regular on SNL, starred in several Broadway productions and has been featured in hundreds of TV shows and movies.
Above all, he's singer/songwriter/guitarist David St. Hubbins of Spinal Tap--the band and the movie. That's what I think of most when I think of him. He's also done memorable work as part of the ensemble in Christopher Guest titles such as Best In Show and A Mighty Wind.
But now he can lie in his hospital bed, read the Daily News, and discover no matter what he does, he'll always be one half of Lenny and Squiggy. At least he's the first half.

So whatever happened to Squiggy?
At least he gets top billing for Lenny & Squiggy.
I was rewatching Twin Peaks earlier this year and had forgotten Squiggy showed up there as a medical supply rep.
David L. Lander still acts occasionally but has also been living with multiple sclerosis for about 30 years.
Holy moley! I remember Lenny & Squiggy fondly from my youth, but if you had asked me yesterday whether either actor had done anything since I would have said "Not that I know of."
But after reading your post, I looked up McKean's history, and found to my amazement that I know him from several things in recent years: SNL, of course, but also as Perry White on Smallville. I just never made the connection.
Is the post title a reference to Guys and Dolls, by the way?
McKean is actually impressive in that Lenny is the kind of role that typecasts you, but he was talented enough not only to play other roles well but even create other indelible characters.
And yes, you got the reference. Before I changed my blog template (or rather, had it forcibly changed), I would have put a link on the title that would have taken you to the song I'm quoting. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do that any more so readers are on their own.
