I've always thought the cello was the coolest instrument in the string section. (Least cool? Viola. It's not even close.) And perhaps the greatest cellist of our time is Mstislav Rostropovich, today's birthday boy.

I don't know violas make me think of sweet music (but thats probably a baseball reference) while cellos bring to mind the possibility of a very uncomfortablepulled muscle in the inner thigh- an even more painful version of the split- though Rostro's technique (and build?) would seem to protect him from this (I admit) imaginary malady
Violas make me think of repeating the same set of notes over and over while the violins get the melody.
